About Shintolin
The death mechanic in Shintolin was called "dazing", with a player-administered revive required to reverse this. While dazed your actions were limited and your AP gain slowed; leading to a strong incentive to avoid this situation.
Uniquely for the time (this was pre-minecraft), the game had a strong crafting and construction focus - with almost all structurs being player made and maintained. The game centered around founding villages and cooperating together, with solo play being difficult if not impossible in many roles.
AP regeneration was modified by a player's logout location (structures offering faster ap regeneration based on how difficult they were to make. Players also needed to manage hunger (starvation causing hp loss).
Other notable features included seasons (which impacted item search and harvest mechanics), a village and claim system, a decay system that reverted unused land to a natural state, an integrated chat system, and 4 distinct experience pools (wanderer/herbalist/crafter/warrior).
While Shintolin never gained the popularity of other tile-based mmorpgs (its entry to the web late in the cycle of these games) it did establish a small cult following.
